Kitchen worktops in Worcester Park

Family suburban stock with a strong extension culture, so most kitchens here have already been pushed out to the rear and the job is a well-planned kitchen-diner with a 2m island, a run of tall units and a separate utility. Newer apartment schemes near the station have compact peninsula kitchens.

The housing stock

What we are usually working with in Worcester Park

The rear extension is usually the newest and truest part of the building, so it is the older half of the kitchen that gives the trouble. Protection down, dry-lay, scribe, then bond: the order matters more in a difficult room than an easy one. The room is swept and the offcuts leave with us.

The larder had a cold shelf and an air brick straight through to the outside, and that brick is usually still open behind whatever now stands in front of it. The side route is boarded where it crosses a soft path or a border, and the gate is measured rather than assumed. Levelled first, then set, then sealed.

The buildings themselves are mostly 1930s semi, 1930s detached, post-war detached and 2000s apartment development. The join count is decided by which of those the room sits in.

Access. Residential roads with driveways and side gates, so access is good, but the station approach and the roads around the parade are congested at school and commuter times.

There is nothing to visit in Worcester Park. Samples are posted free, the template is taken in your kitchen and the stone is fitted there too.

What gets asked for here

Some of them overhang on two sides at once, and each side is worked out separately, because the load on an edge people lean against is not the load on an edge people walk past. Joins are pulled with suction clamps and finished flush, then colour-matched, which is the last thing done rather than the first. Scribed one piece at a time.

Worcester Park in the housing figures

On the Worcester Park streets we cover, much of the housing went up in the twenties and thirties. Knowing the plan before we arrive is what keeps it a single visit. What the figures predict, the fitters still verify.

The building, and what it does to the job

Base units from the seventies and eighties are often only 500mm deep, so a 600mm stone top overhangs at the front and the doors want checking against it. Rear or shared-path access is often the only way to bring a long piece in without turning it in the hall. The slow parts are slow for a reason.

There are a lot of hob-and-extractor combinations here that need a downdraft cut-out in the worktop, which changes the island layout and has to be agreed with the appliance spec before templating.

Questions

Working in Worcester Park

01

Do you come out to Worcester Park for a worktop?

Yes. Family suburban stock with a strong extension culture, so most kitchens here have already been pushed out to the rear and the job is a well-planned kitchen-diner with a 2m island, a run of tall units and a separate utility. Newer apartment schemes near the station have compact peninsula kitchens. Block paving bedded on sand can rut under a fully loaded van, and that is said to the customer beforehand rather than explained afterwards. The fitting slot is set around it, which is why we ask about it when the date is booked and not before we leave the yard. Forty metres of carry changes the shape of the whole day.

02

What kind of kitchens do you usually work on in Worcester Park?

1930s semi, 1930s detached, post-war detached and 2000s apartment development. Where the dividing wall has come out there is a steel over the opening and a nib of the old wall left at each end, and a run turning that corner has to clear both nibs. Access is usually the easy part here, as most of these have a side gate and a back door straight into the kitchen, so we carry down the side alley rather than through the house and keep the mess outside. Carried once, and carried properly.

03

How hard is it to get stone into a Worcester Park kitchen?

Residential roads with driveways and side gates, so access is good, but the station approach and the roads around the parade are congested at school and commuter times. A step up to a patio or a raised threshold at the back door means the piece is lifted rather than rolled, and that is where the crew size gets decided. Finding it out on the morning costs the whole slot, because there is no second route to fall back on. Every re-grip is a chance to chip a piece, so they are planned out.

04

What do Worcester Park customers usually want done?

Worktop installation, in that order. Where a family has been living around a building site for months, the finish date carries more weight than any other part of the specification. The fitting day is scheduled to suit that rather than to suit the diary. A missing sink stops eight kitchens, not one. There are a lot of hob-and-extractor combinations here that need a downdraft cut-out in the worktop, which changes the island layout and has to be agreed with the appliance spec before templating.

05

What makes one Worcester Park kitchen cost more than another?

An island is a single visible piece with four finished edges and no wall to hide against, so it is the piece the whole kitchen is judged on. On the day that means dry-laying the whole layout first and only then pulling and bonding the joins. One datum for every run in the room. Anything that has to stay accessible, a stopcock, a gas meter, a riser panel, is marked on the template so the stone is cut around it instead of over it. On the day it means dry-laying, marking, and cutting the scribe on site before anything is bonded. Offered up twice, bonded once. Supply-only material opens at £110 per square metre, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted line by line rather than as a single number.

06

Are Worcester Park flats a problem for you?

Where two people share the decision it helps to know early which of them is settling the edge profile and which is settling the budget, because it is rarely the same person for both. The fitting day is arranged with whoever can actually give us access for the whole slot. A locked door costs the day, not an hour. Say what the building is at the booking stage and the lift, the stair turn and any freeholder notice become part of the plan rather than a surprise.

07

Can you get a full-length top into an upstairs kitchen in Worcester Park?

The carry route is measured before anything is cut, so a piece that will not make the turn is split at the drawing stage rather than discovered on the day. A join forced by the route still sits over a gable, so it is no poorer a join for that. A side gate and a back door mean the stone never goes through the house at all, which keeps the dust and most of the risk outside. We walk the route with a tape and protect it end to end before the first piece is lifted. Someone stays on the trailing end the whole way in.

08

What if something breaks during the fit?

The rest of the kitchen still goes in. One damaged piece does not hold up the pieces either side. A remake goes back through the same cutting and polishing, so it is a return visit rather than a patch. Most breakages happen on the carry, which is why the route is walked and measured before anything comes off the van. The side passage is the measurement that matters, because a piece has to be carried flat down it and then turned in at the back door, and the turn is always tighter than the passage. It sets the crew: two fitters where the route is straightforward, four where it is not. The last piece off the van is the first one fitted.

09

How do you cut out for an undermounted sink?

The tap hole is drilled in the workshop too, and its position depends on how far the tap has to swing. A tap under a window board still needs room for its handle to lift, which is checked at the template. A boiling tap needs a hole of its own and a cupboard below for the tank, so the units change too. If the island is a few hundred millimetres longer than the usable length of a slab, a second slab gets bought to gain that overhang, and the whole slab is paid for rather than the part used. A layout that has been packed and levelled run by run instead of to one datum shows as a step where two pieces meet. The island is set against the perimeter, not a wall.

10

Do most Worcester Park kitchens take upstands or full-height splashbacks?

An upstand is a slim strip that follows the worktop up the wall; a full-height splashback runs from the worktop to the underside of the wall units. Stone up a wall is heavier than tile and bonded rather than hung, so the wall has to be sound. Tiling and stone can meet, but where they meet is decided before the template rather than after. The windows were steel to begin with and have been swapped for plastic in openings lined out to suit, so the reveal is now deeper than the brickwork behind it. The fitting itself is slower than the carry: original plaster on the party wall and around the old chimney breast is rarely square to the run, so back scribes get cut on site, and where a return wraps into a breast recess we template that shoulder tight and ease it in. Old floors get packed, not argued with.
