Worktop replacement in Blackfriars

Taking out a tired laminate worktop and fitting stone on the units you already have, in a single day.

Blackfriars kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

Plasterboard partitions mean light scribes and clean joins, and the fabrication effort moves to the visible faces instead. Old top out in the morning, new stone down and sealed the same afternoon, with a plumber either side of us. A single day, planned properly.

Older commercial conversions here have thick masonry cross-walls, meaning the kitchen sits in a defined bay and long single pieces are actually easier than in a modern open plan. Riverside flats put the living space against the glazing and the kitchen against the core, so the run is 3-3.5m with a peninsula facing the river and one polished exposed end on show. Queen Victoria Street and the Embankment approaches are red route and bus-heavy with no stopping, so unloading is into a building's own basement bay or a booked side-street window, not the main road. Most buildings run a security desk with contractor sign-in, and the goods lift needs booking a few days ahead.

A riverside block is a managed building with a booked goods lift, a loading bay and a concierge, and all three have to line up on the same day. The room itself is the easy part: walls are plumb, corners are square and the floor is flat, so scribes are minimal and joins can be tight. Units kept, surface changed, one day.

What we are usually templating in is riverside apartment block, 1990s-2000s conversion of commercial building, modern mixed-use tower and small period flat above offices. The differences between them show up at template, not at enquiry.

True everywhere

Worktop replacement, in short

  • The units stay. Only the surface changes.
  • Old tops come out in the morning, new stone is down and sealed the same day.
  • A plumber disconnects the tap and waste before we arrive and reconnects at the end of the day.
  • The carcasses have to be sound: stone is far heavier than laminate.

Covered from the Essex patch. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

Getting stone into the room

A red route means no stopping, and no stopping means exactly that, so the stone comes in from a side street or from a bay behind the property. Waste is the part people forget: the old laminate or tired granite has to be walked back to the van and it does not get lighter. Old tops out and new stone in, both through the same gap.

What gets asked for here

Second or third on the list around here, after worktop installation. Same visit, same bench, same crew, same lead time.

The building, and what it does to the job

Piece size is set by the lift car and the entrance dogleg, which routinely turns a two-piece kitchen into a three-piece one. The work is all in the building, not the kitchen. What is under the old top is the real question.

Riverside peninsulas are seen from three sides, so pay for the extra polished edge and end profile rather than leaving a sawn edge facing the room.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Worktop replacement in Blackfriars

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you cover Blackfriars?

Yes. Blackfriars is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are EC4V, EC4Y. It is run from the Essex side, covering Essex & East London. The realistic answer on a main road is an early slot, a spotter on the van and pieces staged in one movement rather than several trips. A replacement is a two-way job, with old tops going out and new stone coming in, so the van needs to stay put across the whole day. The waste run is planned, not improvised. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Does the housing in Blackfriars change how worktop replacement works?

These buildings have firm rules about what can be propped open, left in a lobby or carried through the residents entrance. Housings set out for a 38mm laminate change clearance when you drop to 20mm or 30mm stone, and that is checked before cutting. Sound carcasses are the one condition. Riverside peninsulas are seen from three sides, so pay for the extra polished edge and end profile rather than leaving a sawn edge facing the room.

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Blackfriars?

Queen Victoria Street and the Embankment approaches are red route and bus-heavy with no stopping, so unloading is into a building's own basement bay or a booked side-street window, not the main road. Most buildings run a security desk with contractor sign-in, and the goods lift needs booking a few days ahead. Piece length is set by the internal diagonal of the lift car, not by the length of the slab. Worth remembering that the old tops have to come out the way the new ones come in, and a laminate run is easier to remove in one length than to carry in one. It sets what the day actually looks like. Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it.

Is worktop replacement common in Blackfriars?

It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop installation. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. Old tops out in the morning, new stone down and sealed the same afternoon. Sound carcasses or it does not go ahead. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. The units stay and only the surface changes, so the whole job is one day rather than a kitchen refit. A plumber either side of us.

Why do two Blackfriars kitchens the same size price differently?

The free end is what needs deciding early: square edge, mitred apron down the end, or a full waterfall to the floor, and a waterfall is cut in sequence off the same part of the slab. Going from a 38mm laminate to 20mm or 30mm stone drops the surface, which shows against tiles, a window board and any freestanding appliance. Height change is checked before we cut. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What has to be finished before you can template?

A lightweight stud partition will not carry a breakfast bar or a peninsula end, and stone finds that out faster than laminate ever did. The old top has been hiding it, so the first honest look at it happens when the laminate comes off. It is the usual surprise, and it is a known one. Book the service lift, loading bay and concierge access for the full day, and confirm the building's permitted working hours in writing. A street with houses in single occupation next to the same houses cut into flats produces two completely different jobs from the same elevation. A plumber disconnects before we arrive and reconnects after we leave, and that is worth booking early. Units kept, surface changed.
