The housing stock
What we are usually working with in Caledonian Road
Small, roughly square kitchens with a back door and a window in the middle of the run: short lengths, few joins, and a lot to work around. Taking the old tops off is also the first honest look at what has been going on underneath them. Same carcasses, straighter lines.
The road itself is narrow with bus lanes and peak-hour loading bans, and the estates behind have gated courtyards. Internal kitchens with no window make dust control and extraction difficult, so cut off site wherever possible and bring the pieces in finished.
A flat over a shop is reached by a separate street door and a straight steep stair, and that stair is the whole access question. The two corners and the cill in a couple of metres are all re-measured once the old top is off. The shell is the constant here; the surface is not.
The stock behind these kitchens runs to Victorian terrace, large post-war estate, canal-side new build and above-shop flat. The one you have sets the piece length before the kitchen does.
Access. Above-shop access is a single street door and a steep straight stair with no landing at the top to turn on.
There is nothing to visit in Caledonian Road. Samples are posted free, the template is taken in your kitchen and the stone is fitted there too.
