The housing stock
What we are usually working with in Custom House
The consumer unit and the meter often sit high on the wall at one end of the kitchen, and neither of them is going to move to suit a run of stone. Pieces come in the order they go down, because there is rarely anywhere to stand the second one while the first is bedded. Sink and hob seated and sealed before we go.
Site hoardings regularly block the road you templated from, so leave a bit of slack in the delivery window for a diverted approach. Ongoing regeneration means hoardings, closed roads and diverted footways that change month to month, so the route needs checking on the day rather than from a map. Where houses survive there is decent kerb space and level front access, which makes those the straightforward jobs.
The under-stair cupboard opens off the kitchen in most of them, and its door swing is the reason a corner run stops where it does. Access is usually the easy part here, as most of these have a side gate and a back door straight into the kitchen, so we carry down the side alley rather than through the house and keep the mess outside. Old fabric gets handled as old fabric.
On this patch the buildings are interwar terrace, post-war council housing and recent regeneration apartment. They were built to different tolerances, and the stone has to absorb that.
There is nothing to visit in Custom House. Samples are posted free, the template is taken in your kitchen and the stone is fitted there too.
