The housing stock
What we are usually working with in Ealing Common
Deep skirtings, a dado and a picture rail survive in the original rooms, so nothing sits flat to the wall without being cut around first. The fitting day is planned backwards from all of it, before the first piece comes off the van. Older buildings get the extra hour.
Those front steps mean every piece gets lifted over three or four risers, which is worth two extra hands rather than trying it with one.
Handmade brick and lime plaster move visibly along a run, and a straight-cut back edge shows it immediately. A range stays where it is and the flanking pieces are eased in around it, since moving it is rarely part of the day. Nothing is screwed into plasterboard and hoped for.
On these streets the housing is Large Victorian villa, Edwardian villa, 1930s mansion flat and conversion flat. None of them is harder than the others; they are awkward in different ways.
Access. Streets around the common are residents-only permit bays. Villas have deep front paths and a flight of steps up to a raised ground floor, and driveways are rare.
There is nothing to visit in Ealing Common. Samples are posted free, the template is taken in your kitchen and the stone is fitted there too.
