The housing stock
What we are usually working with in Friern Barnet
Sash windows sit low in the rear wall, and the sill often lands below the height a worktop wants to run past. The old tops come off in pieces, and what is under them decides whether the units need levelling before anything new goes on. The old cut-outs rarely match where the new appliances go.
The gated conversion estate has security barriers, a one-way internal road and controlled parking, so deliveries must be pre-registered; the surrounding streets are ordinary permit-controlled suburbia with some driveways. In the listed conversions the walls are solid and thick with deep window reveals, so returns into the reveal have to be templated individually and cannot be assumed square.
The original larder or store cupboard usually survives in a corner, and that alcove is deeper than the units and squarer than the walls around it. In most Victorian terraces the kitchen sits in the back addition, so you get a narrow galley with one outside wall and nothing square to work off. A replacement is measured against the walls as they are now.
The stock we template in here is Victorian and Edwardian terrace, 1930s semi and gated conversion of the former hospital. Which one you have changes the order of the day more than the design does.
There is nothing to visit in Friern Barnet. Samples are posted free, the template is taken in your kitchen and the stone is fitted there too.
