The decision usually gets made standing in the room rather than at a desk, which is why a slab is worth viewing whole instead of choosing from a sample card. A half-day of access is not a fitting day, and it is better to say so at booking than to find out at eleven. A rolling programme loses a flat to one missing key. If we know the building when you book, the lift, the stair turn and any freeholder notice are worked into the day rather than found on it.

A long top on units that were shimmed once and never checked is the commonest version of this, and it is cheap to fix beforehand. Packing takes up small variation. It is not there to hide something that belongs in the units. The returns into a breast recess are the tightest scribes in the room, and they are eased in rather than forced. Rushing that is what leaves a gap you look at every morning for fifteen years. Level is checked across the room, not along one wall.

Both are templated after the worktop is down and settled, because they are cut to the wall itself. The joint between splashback and worktop is siliconed, never grouted, so it can move a little without cracking. Tiling and stone can meet, but where they meet is decided before the template rather than after. These have been added to over two centuries, so the kitchen is made of two or three walls of different ages and different thicknesses. The island and the back run are nested together so the movement in the stone relates across the room. What the wall does is on the drawing before the saw runs.

Nothing is payable until the template, and the template measures the room as it stands rather than estimating from a plan. The design and quotation visit is free and carries no obligation, so a figure exists before any commitment. An alcove is commonly wider at the back than at the front, so a piece cut to the opening drops in and then stands off the rear wall. The back edge is eased in progressively rather than offered up once and forced. The notch is eased until it drops, then bonded.

A groove set is its own item on the quote rather than something rolled in with the sink cut-out. The grooves sit inside the depth of the top with stone left either side, so a shallow run limits them. A utility or boot room usually takes a second run of stone, templated with the kitchen and fitted after it. All of that is settled at the nesting stage, because a machined piece cannot be adjusted afterwards. The drawing decides it before the saw does.
