People often assume bathroom worktop fitting in Northwick Park is a straight swap, and sometimes it is, though the kitchen usually has an opinion about that. Interwar semis alongside purpose-built 1930s flat blocks, where the flats have fixed compact kitchens of around 2.7m against a services wall and cannot be reconfigured. The houses take normal rear extensions, but a large slice of the local work is buy-to-let and short-let refits in the flats with hardwearing, plain material. You will see the drawing before anything is machined, and if it is wrong on paper it gets changed on paper.
Old plaster built up over decades makes the scribing heavy, and that time has to be in the plan rather than found on the day. None of it changes the material, but it does decide whether the top comes out of offcut stock or wants a slab bought for it alone. Small enough to carry, awkward enough to plan.
The original fitted dresser and the vent to outside air have often left their openings behind the units, unfilled and unrecorded. Walls are thick, old and out of true, which means the vanity is scribed at both ends and the splash return is cut to follow the wall rather than to a straight line. Where the floor is solid, the unit sits where it is put.
What we find behind the front doors here is 1930s semi, 1930s mansion-style flat block and hospital and campus-related accommodation. They are not interchangeable, and a worktop finds the differences quickly.
