Any kitchen in Northwood comes to bathroom worktop fitting with a history, and reading that history is half of getting the measurements right. Big detached houses running to double islands, bookmatched veined slabs, full-height stone splashback panels and boiling taps. Long lead times and premium specification are normal rather than exceptional. You will see the drawing before anything is machined, and if it is wrong on paper it gets changed on paper.
Solid brick with a sand and cement render is firm to work against and reliably out of plumb across the length of a run. What that does to a vanity is push the whole job into a narrow depth, because a bathroom takes the same stone as a kitchen in about two thirds of the width. A vanity top is a small piece with a great deal drilled through it.
These were built with a separate dining room, and most have had the wall between it and the kitchen taken out with a steel put in above. Half-tiled walls are the pattern in these houses, and the tile line is what a splash return has to meet, which is settled before the top is drawn rather than after. A separate WC becomes a cloakroom with a very small top.
The stock on this patch is Interwar detached, postwar detached, gated modern development and large Edwardian villa. The one you have sets the piece length before the kitchen does.
