Machining is permanent. If a later kitchen moves the sink, the grooves stay where they were cut. A groove set needs a clear stretch of worktop beside the bowl, so it competes with the run for length instead of being free surface. A cast iron soil stack runs down the outside of the rear wall, so moving the sink means a fresh penetration through solid brick. Protection down, dry-lay, scribe, then bond: the order matters more in a difficult room than an easy one. Packers under the carcass, not shims under the stone.

It is quoted by area like the worktop, so a long run is a material line rather than a trim. A full-height piece shows a wall that is out more than an upstand does, over the extra height. The joint between splashback and worktop is siliconed, never grouted, so it can move a little without cracking. Cottage terraces have no hall to speak of and the front door opens almost straight into the room, which makes the carry easier and the protection harder.
