The housing stock
What we are usually working with in South Wimbledon
Lower ground floor kitchens are reached by a stair with a winder in it, and the head height over that winder is lower than the room at either end. Carcasses that carried laminate for two decades are worth checking, and often bracing, before they carry stone. Nothing new goes down until the run reads level end to end.
Front doors open more or less straight onto the pavement with no front garden to stage on, and Merton High Street plus the tram line limit where a van can sit. Old walls out here bow badly over a 3m run, so scribe generously and expect to take 10 to 15mm off the back edge rather than trusting the plaster line.
That rear wall carries the back door and the only window, which leaves very little uninterrupted length for a sink run. A full-height panel in a chimney recess is templated as a trapezium, since that recess is square in neither direction. What the plaster is stuck to matters more than its colour.
The stock we template in here is Victorian bylaw terrace, Edwardian terrace, Postwar council block and Above-shop flat. The one you have sets the piece length before the kitchen does.
Access. Hallways are around 900mm wide with a dogleg at the stairs, so the slab is turned on edge before the first corner.
There is nothing to visit in South Wimbledon. Samples are posted free, the template is taken in your kitchen and the stone is fitted there too.
