Yes. Older cottages have small, low-ceilinged kitchens of 2m to 2.6m with uneven floors and thick walls, so tops get scribed heavily and islands rarely fit. The larger Victorian houses on the edge of the conservation area extend to the rear and take a 3m run plus a compact peninsula. Where the bay sits some distance from the core, the carry across the car park is the longest leg of the day and gets boarded and lit. Floors are suspended timber over a shallow void and have moved, so the units are packed and levelled before anything is set on them. The core streets are filtered with timed restrictions on through traffic, so the working approach is from a specific direction and a suspension is often needed for a full-size van. Cottage doorways can be under 760mm with a step up and a low lintel, which rules out carrying a wide piece flat. A tiled hall floor takes a dropped corner badly, so boards go down over the tiles before anything comes through the door. With no room to turn, the old top gets cut up in the kitchen instead, which is dusty work and needs the room emptied first. It sets what the day actually looks like.

Mixed ownership means the decision-maker is not always the person who lets us in, so it is worth being clear early about who signs the quote off. If the carcasses are tired the honest answer is that stone will find that out, and it is better said before than after. Units stay, so the flat is usable that evening. Tell us about the building at the point of booking, so the lift, the stair turn and any freeholder notice are allowed for in advance.

Machining is permanent. If a later kitchen moves the sink, the grooves stay where they were cut. They read strongly across a dark stone and are nearly invisible on a pale one, so look before deciding. An under-stairs cupboard eats one end of most of these kitchens, and the run stops at a door that has to keep opening. All of that is settled at the nesting stage, because a machined piece cannot be adjusted afterwards. Mitres are dry-assembled before the polisher touches them.

No installed price per square metre is published, because it is not a real number. Taking the old tops away is a line rather than an assumption, so it comes off if you do not want it. Level has to hold across the whole room rather than along one wall, or a floor that falls end to end shows as a step where two pieces meet. This is the commonest reason a replacement turns out to need more than a straight swap. A filler strip is evidence, not decoration.

Templating and fitting are two visits, not one, and the gap between them is when the stone is actually cut. The fit follows 5 to 10 working days after the template, and nothing is cut before that visit because nothing is cut from a plan. Nothing in a house of this age is square, and the kitchen is usually the part that has been altered most often. The workshop works to the template drawing and to the measured route, in that order. Slab yield falls when the runs stop being straight.

An upstand covers the gap where the worktop meets a wall that is not flat, which is its real job. What decides between them is usually the wall: what it is built of, how flat it is, and where the sockets ended up. Tiling and stone can meet, but where they meet is decided before the template rather than after. A small room puts the sink, hob and tap cut-outs close together on one short length, and the bridge of stone left between them decides whether it can be cut in one piece. Pieces are sized to the tightest turn on the route before anything is nested to the slab. A century of movement is taken out at the bench.
