Kitchen worktops in Wimbledon Chase

A good proportion of bungalows here mean single-level kitchens where the whole room can be worked at once, wide U-shapes with a run on three walls and no upstairs to negotiate. The semis follow the standard rear kitchen plan with the pantry recess absorbed into a taller unit run.

The housing stock

What we are usually working with in Wimbledon Chase

Solid brick with a sand and cement render is firm to work against and reliably out of plumb across the length of a run. A wall out by a few millimetres over a metre will show behind a full-height panel and disappear behind an upstand. A return into a reveal is its own scribed piece.

Bungalow ceilings are low, which means tall wall units come down close to the top, check hob clearance and upstand height before cutting the splashback panel.

Wide doorways and level thresholds mean full-length pieces go in whole and the join count comes down to slab length alone. The old top comes out in the morning and the new one goes onto the same units the same afternoon. The floor has dropped since the kitchen went in.

On this patch the buildings are 1930s semi, Interwar bungalow and 1950s detached. They fail in different places, which is why the survey looks at different things.

Access. Driveways and dropped kerbs are common so the van gets close to the door, and single-storey properties mean the carry is level from van to room. The constraint is usually a low porch canopy or a narrow front door reveal rather than stairs.

There is nothing to visit in Wimbledon Chase. Samples are posted free, the template is taken in your kitchen and the stone is fitted there too.

Merton

Getting stone into the room

Where the van cannot turn on the plot it has to arrive already facing the right way, so the approach along the street is part of the plan. It is the difference between a day that runs to time and a day that spends its slack on the street. A spotter on the van is a man off the tools.

The building, and what it does to the job

An alcove is commonly wider at the back than at the front, so a piece cut to the opening drops in and then stands off the rear wall. Upstands are scribed along their top edge as well as their bottom, which is slower than it looks and is the reason they sit tight. Make the wall good first, or accept the detail.

Questions

Working in Wimbledon Chase

01

Do you come out to Wimbledon Chase for a worktop?

Yes. A good proportion of bungalows here mean single-level kitchens where the whole room can be worked at once, wide U-shapes with a run on three walls and no upstairs to negotiate. The semis follow the standard rear kitchen plan with the pantry recess absorbed into a taller unit run. A drive behind an electric gate depends on somebody being in to open it and on the gate staying open while the load comes off. The fitting slot is set around it, which is why we ask about it when the date is booked and not before we leave the yard. Camera enforcement does not take an explanation.

02

What kind of kitchens do you usually work on in Wimbledon Chase?

1930s semi, Interwar bungalow and 1950s detached. Where the roof has been converted there is usually a steel over the kitchen that went in after the walls, and the run beneath it is worth checking for square. The kitchen is normally the original back room with a later side-return or rear extension bolted on, and that helps us: most pieces can go down the side alley and in through the back door in one length, so we can avoid joins that a front-door route would force. Plaster comes away with the old upstands more often than not.

03

How hard is it to get stone into a Wimbledon Chase kitchen?

Driveways and dropped kerbs are common so the van gets close to the door, and single-storey properties mean the carry is level from van to room. The constraint is usually a low porch canopy or a narrow front door reveal rather than stairs. An inward-opening door swinging back against the wall leaves less clear opening than the frame measures, and a storm porch in front of it is tighter again. Worth remembering that the old tops have to come out the way the new ones come in, and a laminate run is easier to remove in one length than to carry in one. The way out is measured with the way in.

04

What do Wimbledon Chase customers usually want done?

Worktop installation, worktop splashbacks & upstands and worktop replacement, in that order. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. The fitting day is scheduled to suit that rather than to suit the diary. A missing sink stops eight kitchens, not one. Bungalow ceilings are low, which means tall wall units come down close to the top, check hob clearance and upstand height before cutting the splashback panel.

05

What makes one Wimbledon Chase kitchen cost more than another?

A U shape uses more linear metres than people expect, and the two returns rarely nest together, so a second slab is a genuine possibility. The existing layout is being kept, so the question is whether the old carcasses will take stone in that shape without more support. Yield is worked out fresh for the new material. The face of a breast is rarely flat, and a top returning onto it picks up that bow across the last few hundred millimetres of its length. It is usually what pushes a job towards a 100mm upstand instead of a full-height panel, because an upstand rides what a panel exposes. Scribed, dubbed out, or set proud. Pick one. Expect material from £110 per square metre supply only, with templating, fabrication and fitting itemised on their own lines rather than folded into one figure.

06

Are Wimbledon Chase flats a problem for you?

Someone who expects to still be there in ten years asks different questions: how a honed finish marks, what a sealer does and does not do, and whether a chip by the sink can be repaired in place. The fitting day is arranged with whoever can actually give us access for the whole slot. A locked door costs the day, not an hour. Mention the building when you book. The lift, the stair turn and any freeholder notice then go into the plan instead of turning up on the day.

07

Can a Wimbledon Chase worktop be done in one piece?

Dark and heavily veined stone shows a join more than a pale even one, which is worth knowing before the slab is picked. Each join is an item on the drawing, so the layout and the figure move together. A finished join is typically two to three millimetres, colour-matched and sanded flush. With three walls in play the chance of one of them being out of square is high, and the template has to carry all three angles. Old laminate has often been holding a run square for years, and taking it off shows what the units were really doing. A run that flexed under laminate gets support now.

08

What happens to the worktop that comes off?

An old stone top is heavier coming out than the new one is going in, and leaves in sections. Old tops are screwed or glued from underneath, so the drawer boxes come out before the worktop does. What comes out goes by the same route the new stone comes in by, which is why that route is walked before anything is lifted. Some drives are wide enough for the van and too short for the tail lift, because the tail lift needs its own clear metre behind the vehicle. A van that has to move mid-fit costs the best part of an hour and takes a man off the tools to do it. Forty metres of carry changes the shape of the whole day.

09

The floor in my Wimbledon Chase kitchen slopes. Does that matter?

Levelling belongs in the carcasses, on their own legs and packers. A sloping floor is not the problem. The plane the unit tops finish in is. If the carcasses are corrected, the template is taken again, since a drawing off units that then moved is worthless. Old breasts carry a bulge low down where the original opening was closed up, and the units stand off it before the stone is measured at all. A tall panel that fits at the worktop will stand off the wall at the top unless the wall is dubbed out or the panel is scribed. The obstruction sets the joint, not the wall.

10

Can the price change after templating?

Taking the old tops away is a line rather than an assumption, so it comes off if you do not want it. The quote is written from the template drawing. Before that it works from what you have described. Cut-outs, edge profile and join count are itemised, so taking one out removes a line rather than starting an argument. Two alcove pieces will not swap over however similar they look, so they are marked left and right at the bench and stay that way to the van. Where the wall cannot be made good, setting the stone deliberately proud on a subframe with a shadow gap reads as a detail rather than a bad fit. Height follows the sill, not the plan.
