Cannon Hill kitchens

The kitchens we meet in Cannon Hill

1930s semi1960s low-rise flatPostwar detached

In Cannon Hill, what the local housing does to stone worktop supply and fitting is worth knowing before you commit to anything. Houses backing onto the common have kitchens reorientated to face the green, often with a peninsula under a rear window rather than a full extension. The 1960s low-rise blocks have compact fitted kitchens where a single 2.4m run and a return is the whole job. Guessing at this stage would only put a wrong number in front of you, so we do not do it.

A stub wall divides the kitchen from the back lobby, and it rarely stayed where the original drawing put it. Weight arrives as a figure per square metre and turns into a question about the floor, which is worth asking in any building where a timber span carries the kitchen. Batch before colour name, because names outlive the batch they came from.

A boiler in a cupboard on the kitchen wall is normal in this stock, and its position is fixed by its flue. Kitchens in this stock are small and roughly square, so the run is short, the seam count is low, and almost all of the figure is material band rather than bench time. Movement needs length, and length is what these rooms have.

The houses and blocks behind these jobs are 1930s semi, 1960s low-rise flat and Postwar detached. A quote that ignores which one you have is guessing.

True everywhere

Worktops, in short

  • Supply is £110 to £550 per square metre across the 181 surfaces we fit.
  • Quartz runs £130 to £500 per square metre, granite £121 to £550 and Dekton £110 to £366.
  • Templating is done in the room itself, once the units are fixed and level.
  • Fitting happens five to ten working days after the template is taken.

The place

Why Cannon Hill is its own job

Every area has its own complications, and in Cannon Hill these are the ones that decide the day. Roads bordering the common are quiet but have limited turning space and grass verges that a loaded van will sink into after rain. Flats in the low-rise blocks are reached by external stairs with an open landing, which makes wind a genuine handling issue with a slab on edge. In the flats the window sill often sits lower than the worktop line, so a sill-height check has to happen before the sink run is cut. Anything about the Cannon Hill job that adds work is on the quote as its own line, not buried in a total.

The work

What worktops involves

Worktop supply and fitting covers the stone itself, machined to your room: the surface, the polished edges, the openings for sink, hob and tap, and the fitting of the finished pieces. Run lengths, join positions and the direction of the veining are agreed at that visit, since where a join falls is a decision about the pattern as much as about the length. You are left with a worktop machined to the room as found, so the back edge follows the wall instead of leaving a shadow gap at one end of the run.

Photographs of stone lie, and they lie hardest about how a colour behaves under a domestic bulb, which is why four quartz samples go in the post free of charge. Sintered slabs are brittle where they are unsupported, so an overhang or a wide aperture is drawn with the support underneath it rather than after the fact. A window set into the middle of the run puts daylight where the chopping happens, so a mid-tone will not go flat. Sampled at home, templated in the room, machined once.

The money

What it costs in Cannon Hill

Two rooms of identical floor area can differ by more than double on the stone alone, and the reason is almost never the size of either of them. Two facing runs mean two sets of edges and two scribes in a small span, which is why a compact galley rarely prices as cheaply as its area suggests. The rate is £110 to £550 per square metre supply only, though what you buy is slabs rather than square metres, which is why the material line follows the yield and not the tape. You see what the offcut costs before you agree to the layout.

1930s and inter-war semis

Cannon Hill in the housing figures

On these streets the inter-war semi is the dominant house type. Large rooms run to a second slab, and at that point the conversation stops being about rate and starts being about which slab. Difficult geometry wastes material, and waste is paid for at full price.

What Cannon Hill asks for

It would be overstating it to call this a speciality on this patch. Worktop replacement, worktop splashbacks & upstands and worktop installation are far commoner. None of that changes the survey, the cut list or the fit.

1930s and inter-war semis

The shape of the run

Two parallel runs with a walkway between them is the most efficient shape there is on a slab, because both pieces nest as straight lengths with almost no waste. Slab dimensions vary by body and by format, and yield on any shape is nothing more than how much of those dimensions the shape allows you to use. An overhang is stone and steel priced together, never stone alone.

Access

Getting stone into a Cannon Hill kitchen

Roads bordering the common are quiet but have limited turning space and grass verges that a loaded van will sink into after rain. Flats in the low-rise blocks are reached by external stairs with an open landing, which makes wind a genuine handling issue with a slab on edge.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Questions we get asked in Cannon Hill

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Is Cannon Hill on your patch?

Yes. Cannon Hill is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SW20. It is worked on our south west London run, along with the rest of Merton. Unrestricted does not mean empty, and a street that is clear at seven is usually full by nine. Whatever the standing allows, the stone leaves that van finished, because every edge, cut-out and internal radius is machined at the works and none of it is open to reconsideration at the kerb. Pieces are unloaded in laying order so the figure runs true. Both visits happen in your kitchen, the template and the fit, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Does the housing in Cannon Hill change how worktops works?

Ceiling heights dropped after the war, so there is less wall between the worktop and the wall units than in anything older. These kitchens are small and roughly square, so the run is short, the join count is low and the material band accounts for almost all of the figure rather than the bench time. At four metres a stone is a tone rather than a pattern. A low sill over the sink run is what decides between an upstand and stone dying into a window board, and there is often less clearance than an upstand is tall. Every notch and every scribe is machined into the piece before it leaves the works, and a hard sintered surface is the least forgiving of a tight internal corner, so one is always cut with a generous radius. Brittle stone and narrow returns are a poor pairing.

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Cannon Hill?

Weight tells on a staircase more than anywhere else, because there is nowhere to set a piece down mid-flight and no way to change your grip once it is moving. That caps the longest piece, and a run split into two lengths nests differently on the slab, which moves the yield and moves the figure with it. A remnant worth keeping rides back on the van rather than to a skip. A skip, a delivery lorry or a run of scaffolding takes the frontage the van needed, so the street is worth a look the day before rather than on the morning. A granite kitchen ends its day with a sealer, and a sealer wants a dry face and a quiet hour afterwards, so that hour is written into the day rather than borrowed from it. A reserved slab is a slab nobody else is allowed to buy.

Do you get much worktops work in Cannon Hill?

Not particularly. It would be easy to say yes and leave it there. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop splashbacks & upstands and worktop installation. That is about what people have here rather than how it gets done. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. Where a family has been living around a building site for months, the finish date carries more weight than any other part of the specification. Where several kitchens are ordered together the sensible move is to take them all off one batch, because two slabs of the same name bought six months apart will not sit happily in the same building. Heavy daily cooking is an argument for natural stone. An open-plan extension puts the worktop in the middle of the living space, so it is looked at from the sofa as well as worked on. Volume work tends to live at the entry end of the range, and the entry end is genuine stone rather than a compromise, since the lowest supply figure we quote is a sintered surface and not a thin laminate pretending to be one. A small kitchen still buys the remainder of the slab.

What am I actually paying for, line by line?

A galley puts the sink on one side and the hob on the other, which spreads the cut-outs across two pieces instead of weakening one. A shape like that nests kindly on a slab, so more of what gets bought ends up on the units and the rate per square metre behaves much as the brochure says it will. Runs in view together come off adjoining areas of one slab. Material runs £110 to £550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting each get their own line.

Is there anything I have to finish before the template in Cannon Hill?

Window boards and cills stand proud of the plaster, so the back edge of the top has to be plotted to where the units actually sit rather than to the wall. A run that sits under strong sun for hours every afternoon suits a surface built to be stable in daylight, because a resin-bound stone is made for indoor use and sustained sunlight is the one thing it was never designed around. What the room obstructs, the layout pays for in slab. Measure the run between the walls, note the cill height above the units, and tell us the thickness of the top that is coming off. A quartz sample left on the counter for a week under the actual kitchen lights settles more arguments than any showroom, and an owner is the only person in a position to do that. That changes which questions are worth asking about the stone, because somebody staying put wants to know how a honed face marks in five years and somebody selling wants to know how it photographs next spring. Matching anything later means writing down the batch reference now.

How much upkeep is a stone worktop?

Upkeep is settled when the slab is chosen, since it belongs to the material rather than the fabrication. Granite tells you when the seal wants topping up: water stops beading on the surface and starts darkening it instead. Marble is the one people underestimate. It is porous, like granite, and wants sealing. Post-war terraces have a short straight hall to the kitchen, which is a good deal kinder than the houses they replaced. Coming off a thick laminate top changes the front edge, and twenty millimetres reads closer to what the room is used to than thirty does against existing tiling and a window board. Four visible edges make the profile part of the design.

Do the template and the fit happen on the same visit?

If the units run late the template moves, not the fit: the gap between them is fabrication. The fit follows 5 to 10 working days after the template, and nothing is cut before that visit because nothing is cut from a plan. The design and quotation visit comes first. It is free and carries no obligation. A boiler hangs on the wall above the run in most of these, and its pipework drops exactly where a splashback wants to go. Which stone belongs on top of all that is a separate question from the building itself, and it is the one with a figure attached, because supply alone runs from £110 to £550 per square metre before a single cut has been made. A slab has a direction, and the room decides which way it runs.

What happens if my units are not level?

A sloping floor is not the problem. The plane the unit tops finish in is. Stone does not flex, so a run that rocks on its carcasses rocks just as badly once it is stone. Units have to be fitted, fixed and level before templating, and it is better to hear that at the template than on the fitting day. Where a run finishes into a reveal, the depth of that reveal is taken at worktop height and nowhere else. A deep scribe eats into the back of the piece, which is quietly important on a stone with directional figure, since the pattern moves backwards as that depth comes off. A cut-out beside a notch leaves very little stone in between.

Who decides where a join falls?

Each join is an item on the drawing, so the layout and the figure move together. A mitred join at a corner is a different job from a butt join along a run, and they are not priced the same. A join cannot cross a cut-out, so a sink mid-run takes away the position you would have used. The catch with a galley is that both runs are seen end-on from the doorway, so any difference in overhang between the two reads immediately. An island is the piece that decides whether one slab covers the kitchen or two, and a second slab arrives as a step in the figure rather than a gentle slope. Edge metreage climbs with corners, not with floor area.

We recently had the Arctic Starburst worktop installed by Worktop WorX and it looks amazing. The subtle sparkle really catches the light and gives the kitchen a clean, modern feel. The Arctic Starburst surface feels high quality, durable, and is easy to keep clean. The finish and installation from Worktop WorX were spot on. Really happy with the result and would definitely recommend both Arctic Starburst and Worktop WorX to anyone upgrading their kitchen.
