We fit three things: quartz, granite and Dekton. That is the entire list, and it has not got longer since we started. Everything else in a kitchen showroom — laminate, solid timber, acrylic solid surface, quartzite, concrete, stainless steel, stone-effect overlays — we do not template, do not fabricate and do not install. Which means this page is written by a company that cannot lose four of the comparisons on it, and can only lose the other four. Read it on that basis, because the pages you have been reading elsewhere were written on the opposite one.
The problem with every page you have already read
Search for any two worktop materials against each other and you will find a page written by a fabricator who sells one of them. It will be balanced-sounding, it will list pros and cons, and it will conclude in favour of the material the author fits. That is not usually dishonesty. It is that nobody writes a page about a product they cannot supply, so the only people who bother to write these comparisons are the people with a stake in the outcome.
The useful version of that page is the one that says what its author sells, then names the cases where the other material wins anyway. That is what this is. It is a routing page: each of the seven sections below hands you to a longer piece that does the actual work, and the sections that recommend against us are the ones worth reading first.
The five questions, in the order that answers them
What each manufacturer tells you to do with a hot pan
Start here, because it separates the materials faster than anything else and because it is the one question where you can bypass every fabricator on the internet and read the maker of the material instead. The table below quotes five care documents, each published by the company that makes the material described.

Read down that column and one thing stands out. Two products from the same manufacturer, made in the same factories, sold from the same racks, carry opposite instructions: one says a hot pan may go straight down, the other says use a trivet. That contrast is the whole of the Dekton or Silestone decision, and it is the only place in this comparison where we make the same margin whichever way you go.
The second thing that stands out is that acrylic solid surface and laminate give the same instruction in different words, and it is the strictest instruction on the table. That is not a reason to reject either material. It is a reason to be honest that a household which puts a roasting tin down on the nearest flat thing is choosing badly if it chooses either one, and that a household which owns two trivets and uses them will never notice.
Where a material we do not fit is the better buy
Four of them, with the situation named. If you are in one of these, we would rather tell you now than template a kitchen for a customer who should have spent the money somewhere else.

Laminate, when the horizon is short
A buy-to-let flat, a kitchen you already know is coming out inside the decade, a house you expect to sell within about five years, or any job where you intend to fit it yourself on a Saturday. Laminate is cut and scribed in the room; stone is machined off site from a template and cannot be adjusted at the door. Divide the money by ten years of ownership rather than comparing headline prices and the answer stops being close.

Corian, when the shape is curved or the bowl is integrated
Acrylic solid surface can be heated and formed into continuous curves, and its joins can be bonded, sanded and polished until they are genuinely invisible — including the join to its own sink bowl. Quartz cannot do either. If you want a curved island, a moulded upstand, or a worktop and basin that read as one piece, that is what Corian does better, and we do not sell it or repair it.

Timber, on the run where nobody washes up
The right specification is almost never all-wood or all-stone. Put timber on the island or the bar run where it is looked at, and stone on the sink and hob runs where water stands and pans land. We will fit the stone half of that job and tell you to go elsewhere for the timber half, which is the correct advice and also the least profitable sentence on this page.

Quartzite, if you want the natural stone and accept the obligation
Quartzite is a natural metamorphic rock, not the engineered material with the similar name, and it carries a natural stone owner’s duties. We do not fit it, do not stock it and do not earn anything from talking you into or out of it, which makes us the only party on that comparison with nothing at stake. The useful service is telling you how to work out which of quartz and quartzite you have actually been quoted for, because the quotes look identical.

Knives, and the one thing this page will not re-answer
Two of the five care documents above give an explicit cutting instruction, and both give the same one. DuPont tells Corian owners not to cut directly on the surface and to use a cutting board. Bushboard tells laminate owners never to cut directly onto any worksurface. Neither instruction is a defect; both are the manufacturer being straight about what an acrylic sheet and a decorative laminate face will do under a blade.
What happens when you cut on stone is a separate question with a longer and more interesting answer, and it already has its own page in our guides. We are not going to re-run it here. The short version, for the purposes of choosing between materials, is that the risk on stone is to the knife rather than to the worktop, and the risk on the two softer materials runs the other way.
Notice what the makers do not say. None of the five documents claims its product is indestructible, and the one that permits hot pans still lists exceptions by thickness and rules out naked flame. A fabricator who makes a broader claim than the manufacturer does is making it up, and that is a useful test to apply to any quote you are given.
Inside our own range, where we are genuinely indifferent
Two of the eight comparisons in this cluster are between things we both stock, which means we earn the same either way and can say so. The first is sintered stone against quartz from a single manufacturer. The second is whether paying for a brand name on the slab buys you anything real.
Supply-only bands across our own catalogue, in £ per square metre
The bands overlap heavily, which is the honest answer to the question people are really asking when they ask whether a brand name on the slab is worth paying for. What a brand buys is not a secret ingredient. It is a warranty document you can read before you commit, colour and batch consistency if a piece ever has to be remade, and published technical data. Where an own-label range offers those three things the premium narrows a great deal, and where it does not, it does not.
One practical note on the top of that chart. The most expensive material in our list is a treated natural granite, not an engineered surface, and the cheapest is a sintered one. Price does not track material class in the direction most people assume, so a budget stated as "we can only afford granite, not quartz" is often based on a ranking that does not exist.
The safety question, answered once and calmly
Since May 2026 there has been a steady flow of coverage about silicosis, engineered stone and a national inspection programme, and it has reached homeowners in the form of a simple worry: is the worktop dangerous. The answer is that the hazard arises during cutting, grinding and polishing, and it falls on the people doing the cutting. It is an occupational hazard in a workshop, not an emission from a finished worktop in your kitchen.
That is a comfortable thing for a fabricator to say and an uncomfortable thing for a fabricator to act on, because acting on it costs money: wet cutting, on-tool water suppression, mist control, powered respirators and health surveillance for the people who use them. Questions people ask before they choose
If you only fit three materials, why should I trust your comparison at all?
Because of what we are willing to lose. A comparison is worth reading when the author can be shown recommending against their own margin, and this page names four situations where a material we cannot sell you is the right answer. Check the same thing on any other page you read: search it for the sentence where the author loses. If there is not one, you are reading a sales page with a table in it.
Is there a material that does everything?
No, and the manufacturers do not claim there is. The one on this page that takes a hot pan without a mat asks you to keep flame away from it and to use protection on the thinner formats. The one that can be sanded back to new asks you never to put a hot pan on it. Every material trades resistance against repairability, and choosing well means deciding which of the two your household actually needs.
Can I mix materials in one kitchen?
Yes, and it is frequently the right specification rather than a compromise. Stone on the sink and hob runs and timber on the island is the most common version. The practical constraints are that the two surfaces should meet at a natural break rather than mid-run, that the thicknesses should be decided together before either is ordered, and that you will be dealing with two suppliers and therefore two lead times.
Does a stone worktop add to the value of the house?
We do not publish a percentage, because the percentages in circulation are unsourced and several of them trace back to press releases rather than to transaction data. What can be said honestly is narrower: a worktop is one of the surfaces a buyer touches during a viewing, and a tired one reads as a kitchen that needs replacing rather than as a worktop that needs replacing.
What do you actually not do?
Plumbing, wiring, tiling, fitting the units themselves, and overlays. We template, fabricate and fit the worktop with our own team, and everything either side of that is somebody else’s trade. Any quote that appears to include a trade the company does not employ is worth a direct question about who will be on site.
What to take away
- Three materials in, seven out. The list of what we refuse to fit is longer than the list of what we do, and four of the refusals are better buys in situations named on this page.
- Ask the manufacturer, not the fabricator. Every heat and cutting instruction worth having is published by the company that makes the material, and the instructions differ sharply even between two products from the same maker.
- Answer heat, water, knives, repair and years in that order. Most people start with the budget and get stuck, because the budget question cannot be answered until the ownership horizon is.
- A short ownership horizon, a curved island, an integrated sink bowl or a bar run you want to feel warm all point away from stone, and none of those is a compromise.
- The silica story is real, it is occupational, and it is about the workshop rather than your kitchen. Ask a fabricator how they cut before you ask them what they charge.
