There is a reason we ask about the building before we talk about stone, and bathroom worktop fitting in Blackheath is a good illustration of it. Around the village and the heath, tall Georgian and Victorian houses put the kitchen on the lower ground or in a rear extension, with long narrow runs and a lot of freestanding-look joinery. In the Span estates off Blackheath Park the kitchens are small, precisely planned and open to the living space, where a heavy 30mm slab overpowers the original detailing. The tape measure decides it, not the description above, and not anything anybody says over the telephone.
Original quarry tile is often still down under two or three later floor coverings, which is why the finished floor height is rarely what anyone expects. Bathrooms in buildings like this are reached up a flight and worked in a room two people can barely stand in, and the visit is planned around both. A vanity top is a small piece with a great deal drilled through it.
A basement kitchen has a flagged or concrete floor laid straight onto the ground, so it is solid, cold and rarely within ten millimetres of level. Where a bedroom has been divided to make a bathroom the window sits off centre to the new room and the vanity ends up under it, which puts the window board in the order rather than outside it. Loft en-suites lose their splash return to the slope.
What the street keeps repeating is Georgian terrace, early Victorian villa, 1950s-60s Span estate at Blackheath Park and Edwardian detached. That mix is why two jobs on the same road can run completely differently.
