You can plan bathroom worktop fitting in Clay Hill from a floor plan, but the plan and the room have a habit of disagreeing once the tape comes out. Mixed semi-rural stock along the lanes towards Hilly Fields: period cottages with tight kitchens next door to large detached houses with full open-plan rear rooms. Boot rooms and second sinks for dogs and horses come up more here than anywhere else in the borough. Guessing at this stage would only put a wrong number in front of you, so we do not do it.
The original front door is narrow and the hall is often the only way in, which puts a ceiling on the longest single piece. The fittings come from four suppliers and arrive in no particular order, so the surface is drawn last and asked to reconcile all of them. Most vanity tops begin life as an offcut from another room.
A small room puts the sink, hob and tap cut-outs close together on one short length, and the bridge of stone left between them decides whether it can be cut in one piece. Pipework in these houses runs on the surface and gets boxed in, and a top that has to notch round a boxing loses depth in the one direction it cannot spare. Concrete walls take a bracket well and a chase badly.
What we are cutting for, here, is Victorian cottage, 1930s detached and stable and paddock conversion. The wall build-up is different in each, and the scribe follows the wall.
