The housing stock
What we are usually working with in Cricklewood
These kitchens were service rooms once, so they are long, narrow and further from the entrance than the floor plan suggests. A wall out by a few millimetres over a metre will show behind a full-height panel and disappear behind an upstand. Sockets move on paper more easily than in stone.
First-floor maisonette kitchens are the recurring headache: the piece has to go up a domestic staircase with a half turn, so plan the joint before quoting a single length.
The flats are stacked identically, so the kitchen above sits directly over this one and its waste passes through the same boxing. Mansion block kitchens are full of boxed-in soil stacks, gas risers and heating pipework, and the boxing is usually plywood or plasterboard that stops short of the ceiling, so the splashback run gets broken up by returns rather than running clean wall to wall. A hundred millimetres covers more than it looks.
Locally the mix runs to Edwardian terrace, 1930s mansion block and new-build flats on the Broadway. The age of the shell tells us more than the age of the kitchen does.
Access. The Broadway is an A road with loading restrictions and bus lanes, so vans park in side streets and the crew carries. Mansion blocks vary wildly, some with a small original lift too shallow for a full slab and a stone staircase as the only alternative.
There is nothing to visit in Cricklewood. Samples are posted free, the template is taken in your kitchen and the stone is fitted there too.
