A short upstand shows a fragment of pattern, never a run of it.

Carrying down a flight is not the easier direction, because the weight runs ahead of the crew and whoever is at the bottom has no way of stopping a slip. That caps the longest piece, and a run split into two lengths nests differently on the slab, which moves the yield and moves the figure with it. Vein direction is settled before the slab is broken into pieces. Where the drive is too short for the van the back end overhangs the footway, and a footway is a route people are using rather than spare space. A granite kitchen ends its day with a sealer, and a sealer wants a dry face and a quiet hour afterwards, so that hour is written into the day rather than borrowed from it. The face is uncovered once, and that once is at handover.

A deep scribe eats into the back of the piece, which is quietly important on a stone with directional figure, since the pattern moves backwards as that depth comes off. Speckle hides the resin line a mitre leaves behind.

A groove set needs a clear stretch of worktop beside the bowl, so it competes with the run for length instead of being free surface. Grooves are machined into the surface rather than applied to it, so there is nothing to come loose later. Developer carcasses are thin cam-lock chipboard, which is entirely adequate under laminate and wants bracing before stone. The surface is where the money actually moves: across the 181 kitchens fitted the median is £220 per square metre, and half of them land between £165 and £300.
