If you have had one quote for bathroom worktop fitting in Elmers End and it did not match the next one, the difference is usually sitting in the room itself. Mixed private and ex-local-authority stock with mostly straight-run kitchens of 2.7-3.4m, often with the original larder cupboard still in place and a back door at one end. Buy-to-let and probate refurbishments make up a lot of the work, so specifications are practical rather than showpiece. Whichever it is, the process below is the same, and the figure you get after templating is fixed.
The carry is the constraint: a single stair with tight half-landings, or deck access with a long walk from the lift. For a vanity the length is rarely the argument, because it is the depth and what has to be drilled through it that set the piece. The depth sets the piece, not the length of the wall.
The kitchen has one external wall carrying a window and a door to a balcony or a drying area, which uses up most of that wall. Bathrooms in this stock are compact, squarely built and take a short vanity that will come out of almost any offcut, which makes them among the cheapest bathroom tops we cut. A large bathroom is where a double vanity becomes possible.
The fabric of the place is inter-war terrace, post-war council-built semi, 1960s low-rise flats and 1990s infill. Knowing which one it is before we arrive is half the survey done.
