Bathroom worktops and vanity tops in Enfield Highway

Yes. Enfield Highway is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are EN3. It is worked on our north London run, along with the rest of Enfield. A single red line has hours and a double red line does not, and the difference decides whether an early start is a plan or a penalty. A boxed soil stack or service riser in the corner of a run eats into the worktop depth and has to be scribed around rather than cut square. A vanity has no depth to lose, so where a kitchen run would take a ten millimetre scribe without noticing, a shallow top cannot spare it. Half-tiled walls leave a line the top has to meet. Have the vanity unit fixed and levelled, and the basin and tap on site, before the templater arrives, and tell us what is inside any boxing. Where a landlord or housing provider is involved there is a specification to meet and a process to follow, and both are settled before a date is offered. Who is paying decides the material here more than anywhere else, because a vanity is small enough that an expensive stone stops being an expensive decision. The tap is bought before the top is drilled, whoever buys it.

A template on a normal kitchen takes two to three hours in the room. The design and quotation visit comes first. It is free and carries no obligation. Templating and fitting are two visits, not one, and the gap between them is when the stone is actually cut. Original quarry tile is often still down under two or three later floor coverings, which is why the finished floor height is rarely what anyone expects. Ground floors fall away towards the garden across the whole footprint, so the units are packed up long before anything is measured for stone. A vanity top is where all of that turns up in miniature, with the basin, the tap holes and a splash return crowded into a few hundred millimetres of stone. A bathroom is a short job that repays being drawn properly.

Splitting a run costs a join, and that is the price of getting stone into the room at all. The lift, if there is one, is measured on the diagonal, because that is the dimension a long piece actually uses. Doorways, the newel post and the handrail usually take the room away, rather than the stairs themselves. A hall radiator or a coat hook at shoulder height takes a hundred millimetres off the usable width, and a hundred millimetres is often the entire margin. The exception is a double vanity, which is a kitchen length in bathroom width and behaves like a worktop from the tail lift onwards. Offcut-sized pieces are the easiest stone in the trade to move.

Remnants bought elsewhere are the awkward case, because the drawing is then made to fit the stone. The quote is itemised, so a job where you already hold the slab is the same job with the material line taken off it. Stone cut to somebody else’s drawing cannot usefully be re-cut to yours. Where a family has been living around a building site for months, the finish date carries more weight than any other part of the specification. It usually means the bathroom is decided late, after the kitchen, and by then the offcut that would have suited it has gone. Loft rooms bring an en-suite and a very tight flight.
