The housing stock
What we are usually working with in Holloway
Chimney breasts and the alcoves either side of them break the run into short pieces before anyone has drawn a kitchen. Cutting sockets and switch plates into stone is a workshop operation, so the electrics have to be final before the template. Panel thickness changes what the sockets need behind them.
Estate blocks need a lift booking, while the converted terraces need a route through a shared hall crowded with bikes and buggies. In converted terraces the shared hallway is the bottleneck, so clear and protect it before anything moves, because you will be turning slabs in a space under a metre wide.
Electrics went in at conversion, some in surface trunking and some chased into lath and plaster, so no cable route in these rooms is safe to assume. Lath-and-plaster and bowed brickwork mean we template for scribes rather than straight cuts, and each piece is offered up and eased in rather than dropped straight down. What the last fitter did to the wall shows up on strip-out.
The fabric of the place is Victorian terrace, large post-war estate, above-shop flat and conversion flat. That is why the same worktop costs differently two doors apart.
Access. Holloway Road is the A1 red route with no stopping, so all loading happens on side streets under the Monday to Friday controlled zone.
There is nothing to visit in Holloway. Samples are posted free, the template is taken in your kitchen and the stone is fitted there too.
