A survey is where bathroom worktop fitting in Loughborough Junction stops being a guess, because until someone has stood in the kitchen nobody knows what it is going to ask for. Terraces hemmed in by the railway viaducts have short rear gardens, so extensions are shallow and kitchens end up wide but not deep, a long run against the flank with a table rather than an island. The interwar estate blocks have separate kitchens with a fixed layout and a larder cupboard. Plenty of kitchens do not match either description exactly, which is what the measured survey is there to sort out.
Permitted working hours, a porter and a booked lift set a hard finish time on the day whatever stage the fit has reached. Nobody looks at a bathroom surface until the sealant discolours, at which point nobody looks at anything else in the room. It is the smallest piece we cut and the most crowded.
Floors are concrete with a screed and a thin finish, so there is no give anywhere and packing the carcasses is the only way to get a plane. A bathroom in one of these was usually carved out of a larger room, so the proportions are odd, the ceiling is high and the reveals are deep enough to want stone in them. The window over the basin is the one the top answers to.
The housing behind these kitchens is Victorian terrace, 1930s estate block, Postwar low-rise and Converted industrial building. What is behind the plaster is different in each, and it matters at fixing.
