Where the vanity tops in Mile End get complicated is rarely the stone itself, and much more often the room the stone has to go into. Terraces here are mostly split into flats, so kitchens are small and often carved out of a former bedroom or the back of a through-lounge, with runs of 1.8m to 2.4m. Landlord refits are the common job, done between tenancies with a hard end date. Photographs of the run and a rough length are usually enough for us to say which of those you are looking at.
The rear wall of the addition carries both the back door and the window, which leaves very little unbroken wall for a run to sit against. What that does to a vanity is push the whole job into a narrow depth, because a bathroom takes the same stone as a kitchen in about two thirds of the width. Nothing about a vanity is standard except the depth of the unit.
The combination boiler hangs on whichever wall happened to be external, and that decision has already used up a stretch of the only wall the run wanted. Original boards over shallow joists give under load, so the unit is fixed back to the wall as well as standing on the floor before any stone goes on it. The bathroom in a house like this is rarely where it started.
Around here the stock is Victorian terrace, 1960s-70s council tower and purpose-built student and rental block. They were built to different tolerances, and the stone has to absorb that.
