The part of bathroom worktop fitting in Morden that surprises people is how much of it is decided before anyone touches a slab. The interwar semis built after the Northern line arrived have small square rear kitchens, typically 2.6m by 2.6m, that get an L-shaped run and a slim breakfast bar rather than an island. Flats above and around the town centre keep original galley layouts and are usually straight top replacements. Nothing gets cut from a description. It gets cut from a template taken off the units once they are in.
A passive vent or a ducted extract shaft takes a corner of the kitchen from floor to ceiling and cannot be reduced. Ventilation, heating and lighting all compete for the same short stretch of wall, so by the time the surface is drawn the room has already been argued over once. Cut for the basin you bought, not for a standard one.
The first kitchen units were metal and screwed straight into the blockwork, and their plugs are still in the wall behind whatever plaster went over them. Bathrooms in this stock are compact, squarely built and take a short vanity that will come out of almost any offcut, which makes them among the cheapest bathroom tops we cut. What the wall is made of decides how the unit is fixed.
What we are cutting for, here, is 1930s Underground-extension semi, Interwar cottage estate house and 1960s town-centre block. Each of those puts the services somewhere else, and the cut-outs follow.
