The housing stock
What we are usually working with in Primrose Hill
Original quarry tile is often still down under two or three later floor coverings, which is why the finished floor height is rarely what anyone expects. Pieces come in the order they go down, because there is rarely anywhere to stand the second one while the first is bedded. Door fronts and stone edges get checked against each other first.
Everything goes down those area steps under the front bridge, through a railing gate that is frequently under a metre wide. The area-stair route caps slab size long before the kitchen does, so plan joins around what will physically pass the railing gate rather than around the sink position.
Listing and conservation conditions apply to a good number of these, which constrains what can be altered around the kitchen rather than what goes on top of the units. Pieces are stood on edge for the turns and carried flat for the straights, and that sequence is agreed before anything comes off the van. A structure this old is worked with, not corrected.
The housing behind these kitchens is early Victorian stucco terrace, Regency terrace, conversion flat and mews. They are not interchangeable, and a worktop finds the differences quickly.
Access. Permit-only bays, waiting restrictions along most of the crescent frontages, and houses set behind railings with a bridge to the raised front door and a separate area stair down to the kitchen.
There is nothing to visit in Primrose Hill. Samples are posted free, the template is taken in your kitchen and the stone is fitted there too.
