The waterfall leg is a whole extra piece of stone. The stone is £110 to £550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted separately.

A live soil stack cannot be chased back into the wall, so the depth it steals is permanent and the run is planned around it rather than through it. A hob dropped into the middle of a length puts sustained warmth at the lip of a cut-out, and an engineered surface will yellow there across ten years where a natural one takes it without comment. Internal corners are cut with a radius because square ones crack. Tell us the longest piece that will reach the flat, the run lengths, and whether the kitchen has any daylight at all or is lit entirely from the ceiling. Two flats with an identical layout can want entirely different things from the same run of worktop, which is why the quote follows the run rather than the address. That changes which questions are worth asking about the stone, because somebody staying put wants to know how a honed face marks in five years and somebody selling wants to know how it photographs next spring. The maintenance budget and the household budget buy differently.

The sink and hob are lifted out with the old top and kept aside if you are reusing them. Old tops are screwed or glued from underneath, so the drawer boxes come out before the worktop does. Take the old tops off yourself if you would rather, and the quote simply carries one line fewer. The van is not staying on a main road for the day, so once the stone is off it goes and parks properly somewhere else. The unused stone rides back unless you want it, and a granite remnant makes a chopping board, a hearth or a window board instead of becoming waste. The film stays on the face until the last trade leaves.

Granite tells you when the seal wants topping up: water stops beading on the surface and starts darkening it instead. The bead where the sink and hob meet the stone is siliconed rather than sealed, and wants watching. Topping a seal up is a wipe-on job with a cloth. The original fitted dresser and the vent to outside air have often left their openings behind the units, unfilled and unrecorded. The joinery around them is deep and period, so a thicker edge with a simple profile sits beside it far better than a slim modern one. Honed hides the dust an older house makes all year.

An island is where this usually shows, standing free with no wall to level against. If the carcasses are corrected, the template is taken again, since a drawing off units that then moved is worthless. Stone does not flex, so a run that rocks on its carcasses rocks just as badly once it is stone. Boxing built in plasterboard on a light frame will take no useful fixing, so nothing bears on it and the stone is carried off the carcasses either side. A run that sits under strong sun for hours every afternoon suits a surface built to be stable in daylight, because a resin-bound stone is made for indoor use and sustained sunlight is the one thing it was never designed around. An engineered surface yellows under standing warmth; natural stone does not.

Join count is a question about slab size and run length, nothing else. Slabs come in finite sizes, so a long run needs a join whatever the room looks like. What you get is a line rather than a step, because the pieces are levelled to each other first. Galley runs are usually short enough to come out of a single slab, so the material band you choose does more to the total than the room shape does. An island is the piece that decides whether one slab covers the kitchen or two, and a second slab arrives as a step in the figure rather than a gentle slope. Finished ends cost by the metre, however short the run is.
