Ask three neighbours what they paid for bathroom worktop fitting in Brondesbury and you will get three answers, all of them correct for the kitchen they were quoting. Heavily converted villa stock, so most kitchens are in flats carved out of larger rooms with the plumbing chased to wherever the stack allows, giving short 2.4m to 3m runs in odd-shaped rooms with a chimney breast in the way. Owner-occupied whole houses are the minority but tend to want a full rear kitchen with an island. Neither case is harder than the other for us. Both start with somebody standing in the kitchen with a tape.
The old scullery is a step down from the main room and the pantry beyond it is a step down again. Bathrooms in buildings like this are reached up a flight and worked in a room two people can barely stand in, and the visit is planned around both. A bathroom top is drawn from the fitted unit, never from a plan.
Ceilings are high enough that an extractor over the island has a long drop, and its position is fixed before the island top is templated. Bathrooms in houses this size are big enough for a double vanity, and a top with two basins and several tap holes is a worktop by any other measure. Pressed steel baths and stone vanities are a common pairing.
On these streets the housing is Victorian villa converted to flats, Edwardian terrace and 1930s mansion block. None of them is harder than the others; they are awkward in different ways.
