Whatever you have read about bathroom worktop fitting in Chingford Mount, the only version that matters is the one measured against the kitchen you are standing in. Terraces and semis with rear kitchens of 2.4m to 3m, many still separate rooms with a serving hatch, plus flats above the shopping parade with narrow single-wall kitchens. Knock-throughs into the dining room are the usual upgrade, giving an L with a short peninsula. The survey answers it, the drawing records it, and you sign off the drawing before a single sheet is cut.
These kitchens have usually been retiled twice and knocked through once, and both of those leave marks the worktop has to deal with. Ventilation, heating and lighting all compete for the same short stretch of wall, so by the time the surface is drawn the room has already been argued over once. The tap decides the drilling, so the tap is settled first.
The drains run down the side alley to a gully and an inspection cover near the back door, and the sink waste has always gone out on that side of the house. The original bathroom here is the small room over the hall, and a vanity in it is short, shallow and hard against two walls, so both ends are scribed. A separate WC becomes a cloakroom with a very small top.
The buildings themselves are mostly interwar terrace, 1930s semi, flat over shop and post-war maisonette. The join count is decided by which of those the room sits in.
