There is a reason we ask about the building before we talk about stone, and bathroom worktop fitting in Cricklewood is a good illustration of it. Edwardian terraces with narrow back-addition kitchens on one side of the Broadway and 1930s mansion blocks on the other, where flats keep a fixed galley of about 2.7m because the risers cannot move. A lot of the terraces are converted into upper and lower maisonettes, so the kitchen is often on the first floor with no possibility of extending. Either way, the next step is the same one: get someone out to look, and get the measurements written down.
Freeholder consent, a works agreement and proof of insurance are often wanted before a van is allowed to unload. What that does to a vanity is push the whole job into a narrow depth, because a bathroom takes the same stone as a kitchen in about two thirds of the width. Basin, tap holes and splash return inside a few hundred millimetres.
Sash windows sit in deep reveals with a working box behind the lining, so a run dying into one has to clear more than the plaster. Walls are thick and out of true, so a vanity is scribed at both ends and the splash return is cut to follow the wall rather than a straight line. A rear addition bathroom is cold, narrow and full of pipework.
The archetypes on this patch are Edwardian terrace, 1930s mansion block and new-build flats on the Broadway. What is behind the plaster is different in each, and it matters at fixing.
Figures cover the statistical area (MSOA) that contains Cricklewood| Figure | Cricklewood | Against London | What it means for the job |
|---|
| homes built before 1919 | 74% | pre-1919 share higher than 96% of the 723 areas we cover | Those walls carry a century of movement. |
|---|
| homes built since 2010 | 4% | post-2010 share lower than 72% of the 723 areas we cover | No two kitchens are set out alike. |
|---|
| households in a converted or shared house | 34% | converted-house share higher than 96% of the 723 areas we cover | A converted flat is measured off the original house, so no two units in the same building have quite the same kitchen run. |
