A good quote for bathroom worktop fitting in Edgware reads like a description of your kitchen rather than a price list, and that is deliberate. Large interwar semis and detached houses with deep plots, where full-width rear extensions with an island and a separate utility are the standard specification, and some kitchens are planned with duplicated sinks and hobs, which is best raised at the start rather than late. Town centre flats are the opposite: fixed compact galleys with no scope to change. If that sounds like guesswork, it is not: it is measured on the day, in your kitchen, before anything is cut.
A serving hatch through to the dining room is common, and closing one up leaves a panel of newer wall exactly where the run passes. For a vanity the length is rarely the argument, because it is the depth and what has to be drilled through it that set the piece. Small enough to carry, awkward enough to plan.
The larder had a slate or terrazzo shelf on its cold wall, heavy enough that it usually got left in place when everything else went. Where the bathroom has been taken over a rear addition the room gains length rather than width, so a longer vanity becomes possible and a deeper one still does not. Stud partitions want noggins before a wall-hung unit goes up.
What we are cutting for, here, is 1930s semi, 1930s detached, purpose-built 1960s flat and town centre redevelopment blocks. Each of those puts the services somewhere else, and the cut-outs follow.
