Where the bay sits some distance from the core, the carry across the car park is the longest leg of the day and gets boarded and lit. If your own slab breaks there is no matching replacement to hand, and that is the real difference. Extension budgets are usually well spent by the time the worktop is ordered, which is where the choice between quartz and a thinner sintered stone actually gets made. A house divided into flats needs a vanity for each of them, and small repeated pieces are the one case where buying a whole slab makes sense. Loft rooms bring an en-suite and a very tight flight.

An upstand is a slim strip that follows the worktop up the wall; a full-height splashback runs from the worktop to the underside of the wall units.
