Hyde Park Estate kitchens
The kitchens we meet in Hyde Park Estate
Before we quote any of the worktop jobs in Hyde Park Estate we want to know what the kitchen actually is, because the answer changes more than the price. The Tyburnia stucco houses have basement or lower-ground kitchens, while the post-war blocks on the estate have generously sized but plain kitchens with a straight 3m run and a separate utility cupboard. Mews houses squeeze a galley into the old carriage floor with a 2.2m run and a fold-out table. Tell us which street you are on in Hyde Park Estate and what the old worktop is, and we can usually narrow it down before we visit.
Chimney breasts and the alcoves either side of them break the run into short pieces before anyone has drawn a kitchen. A dark gloss in a room shaped like that will advertise every crumb and every water spot, and a mid-tone speckle is the reason another kitchen still looks clean by the evening. Quartz, granite and sintered stone answer three different rooms.
A basement kitchen has a flagged or concrete floor laid straight onto the ground, so it is solid, cold and rarely within ten millimetres of level. A matt or honed face suits a period room better than a mirror polish, and it is also the finish that hides the fine dust an old house produces all year round. A tall room carries a thick edge; a low one does not.
The kinds of building we work in here are stucco terrace, 1960s estate block and mews house. The template reads them differently even where the layout looks identical.

Worktops, in short
- Supply is £110 to £550 per square metre across the 181 surfaces we fit.
- That figure is the slab. Fabrication, edges, cut-outs and fitting are quoted separately.
- Four free quartz samples are posted out, because photographs of stone lie.
- The material is guaranteed 25 years and the workmanship 5.

The place
Why Hyde Park Estate is its own job
We measure and fit in Hyde Park Estate often enough to know what to ask about before anyone agrees a date. Blocks have underground parking with a 2m height barrier and a residents' lift, so the slab either comes down the ramp on a low-loader or gets walked from the street. Mews are cobbled and narrow with residents parked nose-in and no turning space. Cobbled mews destroy trolley wheels and shake a slab - carry across the cobbles by hand rather than wheeling it, every time. Our own installers do the fitting, so whoever templated the room is not handing the problem over to a subcontractor.
The work
What worktops involves
The stone is quoted per square metre for supply and itemised beyond that, so the slab, the edge profile, the openings and the fitting each appear as their own figure. Run lengths, join positions and the direction of the veining are agreed at that visit, since where a join falls is a decision about the pattern as much as about the length. You are left with a worktop machined to the room as found, so the back edge follows the wall instead of leaving a shadow gap at one end of the run.
Dekton and the sintered family are fired rather than bound, so warmth and sunlight do nothing to them at all, and they are the most demanding of the three to machine. Colour under the kitchen lights is the thing samples exist to settle, and a warm bulb will pull a cool grey brown while a cool one drains a cream stone of everything generous in it. In a house of this age the kitchen stretches away from its only window, so the shortlist closes around a pale honed face before anybody names a colour. Heat, water and sunlight sort the shortlist quickly.

The money
What it costs in Hyde Park Estate
Two rooms of identical floor area can differ by more than double on the stone alone, and the reason is almost never the size of either of them. Short lengths nest well and waste little, so the material line is usually the kindest part of a galley quote. Thickness on its own can move the supply figure a long way inside the £110 to £550 range, and it changes the machining as well, which is why the two are never given as one number. Nothing about the stone is folded into a rate and hidden there.

The shape of the run
The walkway between the two runs is fixed by the units either side, so any overhang added to one worktop comes straight off the space somebody has to stand in. A splash return where a run meets a wall is its own polished piece, and the height it is cut to is dictated by whatever sits above it. A single straight run is the cheapest stone you will ever buy.

What Hyde Park Estate asks for
Not typical work for this area. Worktop replacement and worktop installation are what the housing asks for. The process is unchanged; only how often we are on the street differs.
Victorian and Edwardian terraces
The carry, and what it rules out
Concierge buildings want the goods entrance, a booked lift and proof of insurance, all of which is straightforward when it is asked for a week out. Where the only way up is a stair, the loading on each tread is a reasonable question, and the gauge answers it as much as the crew does. The pieces either side of a break come off adjoining slab.

Getting stone into a Hyde Park Estate kitchen
Blocks have underground parking with a 2m height barrier and a residents' lift, so the slab either comes down the ramp on a low-loader or gets walked from the street. Mews are cobbled and narrow with residents parked nose-in and no turning space.
Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Questions we get asked in Hyde Park Estate
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you cover Hyde Park Estate?
Yes. Hyde Park Estate is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are W2. It is worked on our central London run, along with the rest of Westminster. A skip, a delivery lorry or a run of scaffolding takes the frontage the van needed, so the street is worth a look the day before rather than on the morning. Whatever the standing allows, the stone leaves that van finished, because every edge, cut-out and internal radius is machined at the works and none of it is open to reconsideration at the kerb. Dry cutting quartz burns the resin and the burn does not polish out. Nothing needs visiting and nothing needs collecting: the template is in your kitchen and so is the fit.
Is there anything about Hyde Park Estate buildings that catches worktops out?
The closet wing is a narrow projection at the back with windows on two sides, which leaves very little continuous wall for a run. Alcoves either side of the old breast chop the run into short lengths, and a kitchen made of short lengths is the case where buying a slab outright beats buying the square metres, because the remainder is paid for in both. Honed hides the dust an older house makes all year. Where a corner is a couple of degrees off, a mitre cut to a theoretical ninety degrees opens on the wall side and there is no closing it afterwards. Every notch and every scribe is machined into the piece before it leaves the works, and a hard sintered surface is the least forgiving of a tight internal corner, so one is always cut with a generous radius. Internal corners are cut with a radius because square ones crack.
What do you check about the route into a Hyde Park Estate property?
Bollards, planters and a one-way service road can turn what looks like a ten-metre carry into a fifty-metre one. That caps the longest piece, and a run split into two lengths nests differently on the slab, which moves the yield and moves the figure with it. Weight per square metre belongs to the material, not to the length. Where parking runs down both sides the road is left as a single lane, and a van standing in it has to be somewhere it does not stop a bin lorry. A granite kitchen ends its day with a sealer, and a sealer wants a dry face and a quiet hour afterwards, so that hour is written into the day rather than borrowed from it. A honed face marks on grit, so nothing is set down bare.
Is worktops what Hyde Park Estate is known for?
Not really, and there is no sense dressing it up. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement and worktop installation. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It gets quoted, cut and fitted exactly as it would anywhere else on the patch. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. Where several kitchens are ordered together the sensible move is to take them all off one batch, because two slabs of the same name bought six months apart will not sit happily in the same building. The cheapest stone we fit is sintered, and it is still stone. A new extension slab is not automatically level, and that wants checking before templating rather than after the stone is cut. Volume work tends to live at the entry end of the range, and the entry end is genuine stone rather than a compromise, since the lowest supply figure we quote is a sintered surface and not a thin laminate pretending to be one. Batch matching is the only honest way to match a surface.
Why do two Hyde Park Estate kitchens the same size price differently?
Both runs are in view at the same time, so the two pieces are taken off the same area of slab and the veining is set to run the same way on each side. A shape like that nests kindly on a slab, so more of what gets bought ends up on the units and the rate per square metre behaves much as the brochure says it will. Nesting is where the quiet savings on a kitchen live. Stone is £110 to £550 per square metre supply only, and the templating, the fabrication and the fitting each carry their own line.
What has to be finished before you can template?
The stone carries the scribe because the wall cannot be persuaded, so back edges are cut oversize and eased in rather than dropped straight down. A hob dropped into the middle of a length puts sustained warmth at the lip of a cut-out, and an engineered surface will yellow there across ten years where a natural one takes it without comment. An engineered surface yellows under standing warmth; natural stone does not. Send the run lengths, say where the sink and hob will sit, and tell us which way the room faces and what lighting is going in above the working run. One owner can take a date next week while the flat below needs three weeks of notice, so several kitchens in one building end up scheduled by the slowest permission. That changes which questions are worth asking about the stone, because somebody staying put wants to know how a honed face marks in five years and somebody selling wants to know how it photographs next spring. Stone is a fixture and outlasts the agreement over the room.
Is templating a separate visit from fitting?
On the fitting day floors and door frames are protected, joins clamped flush, sink and hob sealed. Between the template and the fit the slab is nested, cut, mitred and dry-assembled on the bench, which is work you never see and is most of the wait. Upstands and splashbacks are templated after the worktop is down and settled, so they are a separate visit. The original front door is narrow and the hall is often the only way in, which puts a ceiling on the longest single piece. Which stone belongs on top of all that is a separate question from the building itself, and it is the one with a figure attached, because supply alone runs from £110 to £550 per square metre before a single cut has been made. A week with a sample on the units beats an hour in a showroom.
How many joins will a Hyde Park Estate kitchen need?
A finished join is typically two to three millimetres, colour-matched and sanded flush. An island often runs in one piece where a wall run cannot. A mitred join at a corner is a different job from a butt join along a run, and they are not priced the same. A galley closed at one end takes a short return across the top, and that little piece carries the same edge work, the same handling and nearly the same cost as a full length. An island is the piece that decides whether one slab covers the kitchen or two, and a second slab arrives as a step in the figure rather than a gentle slope. A bold vein and a busy shape are an expensive pair.
Do you take the old worktop away?
An old stone top is heavier coming out than the new one is going in, and leaves in sections. If you want the old top kept for a garage or a utility, say so and it stays on site. On a replacement the old top comes off in the morning and the new stone is down and sealed the same day. With no scheme to work with there is nothing to book and nobody to ring, so the only levers left are an early arrival and a word with the neighbours. Sintered surfaces are the hardest of the three to machine and the messiest to cut wet, which is precisely why none of that happens on a public pavement. The last hour on a granite kitchen belongs to the sealer.
Will you fit a worktop I have bought myself?
How much slab you hold matters: upstands and any remake have to come out of the same batch. Templating, fabrication and fitting are the same three lines whether the stone came from us or from you. Supply through us runs £110 to £550 per square metre for the slab alone, which is the line you would be removing. The junction between the original room and the extension is the point to watch, because the two floors rarely sit at the same height. Adding an island is what moves most of these projects from one slab to two, and that jump is the single largest step in any worktop quotation. The material is guaranteed for twenty five years, so choose once.
