The kitchens in Kensal Green are not all one kind, and which kind you have changes the vanity tops long before the stone is ordered. Terraced houses with narrow back additions and a growing number of canal-side and former-industrial new-build flats with open-plan kitchen-living rooms. The house jobs are typically 3m plus a 1.5m return with the boiler still in the kitchen, and the flats are handover kitchens being upgraded from laminate without moving a single unit. None of that changes what you pay in Kensal Green. The figure is set at template and it holds from there.
Chimney breasts and the alcoves either side of them break the run into short pieces before anyone has drawn a kitchen. Cleaning is what a bathroom surface actually lives through, since limescale, bleach and whatever gets used on the mirror all end up on it sooner or later. Shelves and a window board come off the same offcut.
The rear door swings inward across the end of the run, so the last few hundred millimetres of worktop are only reachable with the door shut. Pipework in these houses runs on the surface and gets boxed in, and a top that has to notch round a boxing loses depth in the one direction it cannot spare. A bathroom over a kitchen has its waste run already decided.
The housing behind these kitchens is Victorian terrace, Edwardian terrace and canal-side new-build block. They are not interchangeable, and a worktop finds the differences quickly.
