If bathroom worktop fitting in Liverpool Street is on your list this year, the useful starting point is not the colour but the shape of the room. Residential units are mostly upper-floor conversions in narrow-fronted commercial buildings, so kitchens are long and thin: a 3m single run along one wall with no facing return, and appliances stacked rather than spread. Ceiling heights are generous but the plan is tight, which is why full-height stone behind the run is more common here than wall cupboards. You are not expected to diagnose your own kitchen. Get us out to Liverpool Street, and we will tell you what you have got.
These kitchens were service rooms once, so they are long, narrow and further from the entrance than the floor plan suggests. A short piece carries an overflow, a waste and a sealant line, and any one of the three can spoil it. A cloakroom top and an en-suite top are one job at two sizes.
Walls are solid brick with lime plaster and a hard skim over the top, and that skim comes away in sheets when old tiles are taken back. The soil stack serves the whole block and will not be moved, so the basin position answers to the plumbing rather than to where the unit would look best. High ceilings do nothing for a vanity, but the reveals do.
The fabric of the place is Victorian commercial building converted to flats, modern apartment above retail, narrow court and alley building and mixed-use scheme near the station. Knowing which one it is before we arrive is half the survey done.
