Two kitchens a street apart in Neasden can turn bathroom worktop fitting into two quite different pieces of work, which is why nothing is priced from the doorstep. Large interwar family houses with heavily used kitchens, and a distinct local pattern of a main fitted kitchen plus a separate hard-working prep or spice kitchen in an outhouse or extension. That second space wants a hardwearing, easy-wipe top and full-height splashback more than it wants a showpiece finish. The quotation visit costs nothing and commits you to nothing. It is also the simplest way to find out which you have.
The plaster is a thick float and set over brick that has blown in patches, so a wall sounds solid in one place and hollow a hand-span away. Ventilation, heating and lighting all compete for the same short stretch of wall, so by the time the surface is drawn the room has already been argued over once. The bridge of stone behind the basin is the part that matters.
The back door frequently opens straight into the kitchen, which is the best carry route in the house and the one people forget to mention. The original bathroom here is the small room over the hall, and a vanity in it is short, shallow and hard against two walls, so both ends are scribed. Older walls give a vanity nothing straight to sit against.
The buildings themselves are mostly 1930s semi, 1930s terrace and post-war estate housing. A quote that ignores which one you have is guessing.
