The kitchens in North Acton are not all one kind, and which kind you have changes the vanity tops long before the stone is ordered. Almost entirely new-build and student-scheme apartments with compact runs of 1.8m to 2.6m, everything integrated and no islands, many of them run by an operator rather than a homeowner. We would rather find an out of square wall at survey than on fitting day, so the survey is thorough and unhurried.
The lift car, the loading bay and the building manager decide the piece sizes here, not the slab. Bathrooms in buildings like this are reached up a flight and worked in a room two people can barely stand in, and the visit is planned around both. Cut for the basin you bought, not for a standard one.
Underfloor heating in the screed means nothing is fixed into the floor, so an island is anchored to the carcasses alone. Partition walls are plasterboard on studs, and a wall-hung vanity carrying stone wants timber behind the board rather than fixings into plasterboard alone. A bathroom over a kitchen has its waste run already decided.
What the rooms sit inside, mostly, is 2010s-2020s high-rise, purpose-built student block, build-to-rent tower and light industrial fringe. The template reads them differently even where the layout looks identical.
