Any kitchen in Putney Heath comes to bathroom worktop fitting with a history, and reading that history is half of getting the measurements right. Postwar blocks around the heath have separate kitchens of a fixed size with a sink under the window and a hatch to the dining area, and the usual work is a like-for-like top with matching upstands. The detached houses backing onto the heath take larger open-plan schemes with an island. Once the template is taken the figure stops moving. Everything before that is an estimate and is described as one.
Floors have usually settled towards the rear, so levelling means packing the units before the stone beds down. A vanity top is where all of that turns up in miniature, with the basin, the tap holes and a splash return crowded into a few hundred millimetres of stone. The depth sets the piece, not the length of the wall.
A boiler in a cupboard on the kitchen wall is normal in this stock, and its position is fixed by its flue. The bathroom is the small room over the kitchen, and the waste already runs where it needs to, so the basin position is more or less settled before anyone draws anything. Concrete walls take a bracket well and a chase badly.
The building stock is Interwar detached, 1950s and 60s purpose-built block and Postwar estate housing. That is why the same worktop costs differently two doors apart.
