The questions that decide bathroom worktop fitting in St Johns are dull ones about doorways, corners and what the floor is doing, and they are asked early for good reason. Modest Victorian terraces and some larger semis caught between the railway lines; kitchens are usually the back addition at 2.2m to 2.8m wide, and narrow plots limit side returns so kitchens tend to stay inside the original footprint. We measure the kitchen you have, not the kitchen the plans said you would have. Those two part company often.
The kitchen normally sits in the back addition or a later side return, which puts the run against the oldest and least straight wall in the building. A vanity top is where all of that turns up in miniature, with the basin, the tap holes and a splash return crowded into a few hundred millimetres of stone. We seat the basin. Your plumber connects it.
A soil stack is strapped to the outside of the addition wall and its branch comes through low, which settles where the sink can go before any layout is drawn. The bathroom in one of these is usually a later addition over the back kitchen, so the walls are thinner, the floor moves and a vanity has to sit level in a room that is not. Old pipework is boxed rather than moved, and the top notches round it.
The buildings themselves are mostly Victorian terrace, Victorian semi-detached villa, 1970s low-rise estate and 1990s infill. The join count is decided by which of those the room sits in.
