The housing stock
What we are usually working with in St Luke's
This is a logistics job before it is a stone job, and the lift car is usually the single biggest constraint on the design. What decides between a slim upstand and full-height stone is nearly always the wall rather than the taste. Same slab run, same day, same batch.
Old Street and City Road are red routes, and the estates have courtyards with bollards and narrow arched entries built for handcarts rather than vans.
Balcony access and long communal corridors are often the carry route, and both are narrower than they look with a piece on edge. Where the stair is the route, each piece is walked up on edge with a hand at every half-landing turn. The age of the house sets the pace of it.
What we are usually templating in is 1930s municipal block, Victorian model-dwelling block, warehouse conversion and modern tower. The differences between them show up at template, not at enquiry.
Access. The older blocks are walk-ups with stone stairs and iron balustrades that do not forgive a swung slab.
There is nothing to visit in St Luke's. Samples are posted free, the template is taken in your kitchen and the stone is fitted there too.
