If you are weighing up bathroom worktop fitting in Whitehall Park, the first thing worth knowing is that the building decides more than the brochure does. Hillside Victorian terraces and villas with generous rear rooms, so the kitchen usually sits at the back of the ground floor with garden access on a 3.5m run and a peninsula. Conservation-area rules keep the rear elevations fairly intact, so extensions are modest and the original room shape survives. Send a few photographs of the run and we will tell you which of those you are dealing with before we come out to Whitehall Park.
A hundred and forty years of alterations sit under the current kitchen, and the worktop is what has to sit flat on top of all of it. What that does to a vanity is push the whole job into a narrow depth, because a bathroom takes the same stone as a kitchen in about two thirds of the width. A window reveal in a bathroom is stone as much as the vanity is.
The communal stair is wide and handsome and the flat door at the top of it is a standard leaf, which is where a long piece stops. The bathroom in one of these is almost never original: it is a later room over the back addition, or a bedroom divided in two. A pod bathroom inside a shell has walls built last week.
The kitchens here sit in Victorian terrace, Victorian villa, Edwardian terrace and conversion flat. None of them is harder than the others; they are awkward in different ways.
