Bathroom worktop fitting in Highgate is decided by the room long before anyone opens a colour chart. Village houses keep small compartmented kitchens with the original layout and chimney breasts still in place, while the interwar blocks have neat purpose-built galleys with fixed service positions. The larger detached villas on the hill are where islands actually happen, and almost always in a rear extension rather than the original room. Every quote we write for Highgate starts with somebody looking at the actual run, not with an assumption about what is behind the units.
A steel goes in where the original back wall came out, and the ceiling steps down under it at the point the run passes beneath. For a vanity the length is rarely the argument, because it is the depth and what has to be drilled through it that set the piece. The same stone as the kitchen, in a narrower cut.
A period cottage has low ceilings, thick rubble-filled walls and a floor that has never been level, and the worktop is the thing that has to look straight. Bathrooms in houses this size are big enough for a double vanity, and a top with two basins and several tap holes is a worktop by any honest measure: it is nested like one, carried like one and priced like one. Half tiling leaves a line the splash return has to meet.
On these streets the housing is Georgian village house, Victorian villa, 1920s mansion block and 1930s modernist block. None of them is harder than the others; they are awkward in different ways.
