If bathroom worktop fitting in Hampstead is on your list this year, the useful starting point is not the colour but the shape of the room. Two very different jobs sit side by side: listed Georgian townhouses where the kitchen is still in the semi-basement with low ceilings, stone floors and structural piers breaking up every run, and larger detached villas where the kitchen has moved to a rear garden room with a genuine island. Basement runs are short and interrupted by chimney breasts, so the cutting list is long even when the room is not. Ring us with the rough dimensions and we will tell you what is likely, then confirm it properly at the Hampstead survey.
Chimney breasts and the alcoves either side of them break the run into short pieces before anyone has drawn a kitchen. A short piece carries an overflow, a waste and a sealant line, and any one of the three can spoil it. One piece, four operations, and nowhere for any of them to move.
A basement kitchen has a flagged or concrete floor laid straight onto the ground, so it is solid, cold and rarely within ten millimetres of level. The bathroom in one of these is usually a later addition over the back kitchen, so the walls are thinner, the floor moves and a vanity has to sit level in a room that is not. Square rooms make short work of a vanity template.
Around here the stock is Georgian townhouse, Victorian villa, Arts and Crafts house, 1930s modernist block and mansion block. They fail in different places, which is why the survey looks at different things.
