Two kitchens a street apart in Wimbledon can turn bathroom worktop fitting into two quite different pieces of work, which is why nothing is priced from the doorstep. Around the Broadway and the streets running up towards the Ridgway you get Victorian and Edwardian houses where the original back addition has been opened into the rear reception, so the kitchen ends up L-shaped with a run down the flank wall and a peninsula where the old wall stood. Newer apartment blocks above the town centre are mostly straight galley runs with a breakfast bar returning off the end. Send a few photographs of the run and we will tell you which of those you are dealing with before we come out to Wimbledon.
Sash windows sit low in the rear wall, and the sill often lands below the height a worktop wants to run past. Bathrooms in buildings like this are reached up a flight and worked in a room two people can barely stand in, and the visit is planned around both. A window reveal in a bathroom is stone as much as the vanity is.
The kitchen occupies the ground floor of the addition with a garden door at the far end, so there is a second way in that is narrower than the front door and a great deal shorter. The bathroom in one of these is usually a later addition over the back kitchen, so the walls are thinner, the floor moves and a vanity has to sit level in a room that is not. Old pipework is boxed rather than moved, and the top notches round it.
Around here the stock is Late Victorian terrace, Edwardian semi, 1930s mansion block and 2000s town-centre apartment. They fail in different places, which is why the survey looks at different things.
