The kitchens in Southfields are not all one kind, and which kind you have changes the vanity tops long before the stone is ordered. The grid of Edwardian terraces has consistent plans with a rear addition that owners widen and lengthen, ending up with a kitchen of roughly 3.4m by 5m holding a long run and a modest island. Many houses are split into upper and lower maisonettes, and the upper one gets a compact L in the old rear bedroom. We measure the kitchen you have, not the kitchen the plans said you would have. Those two part company often.
Ground floors fall away towards the garden across the whole footprint, so the units are packed up long before anything is measured for stone. Cleaning is what a bathroom surface actually lives through, since limescale, bleach and whatever gets used on the mirror all end up on it sooner or later. The aperture is polished because you look straight down into it.
The meters sit in the hall or under the stairs on the way through, so the carry passes a cupboard door that has to be shut and protected before anything moves. Either way the walls are thin, the floor is boards over shallow joists and nothing meets at a right angle, so the vanity is scribed at both ends and the unit is fixed back to the wall as well as standing on the floor. A separate WC becomes a cloakroom with a very small top.
The mix here is Edwardian terrace, Edwardian semi and Interwar mansion flat. That is why the same worktop costs differently two doors apart.
