The housing in Southfields sets the worktop jobs into a few recognisable patterns, and knowing which one you are in saves a great deal of argument later. The grid of Edwardian terraces has consistent plans with a rear addition that owners widen and lengthen, ending up with a kitchen of roughly 3.4m by 5m holding a long run and a modest island. Ceilings are tall and the joinery is usually painted, which is the setting where a thirty millimetre edge looks right and a slim one reads as a saving somebody made. At four metres a stone is a tone rather than a pattern.
