Nothing about bathroom worktop fitting in Becontree Heath is decided by us alone, since the units, the walls and the way you get through the door all get a say. Around the civic centre and Wood Lane there is a band of privately built 1930s semis that are noticeably more generous than the surrounding estate housing, with bigger rear rooms and space for a proper island once extended. These take full remodels with a 3m island and a long back run, in contrast to the smaller estate kitchens either side. If your kitchen is a bit of both, that is common enough and it changes nothing about how we go about it.
Kitchens in this stock are compact and reasonably square, which makes the fixed lines a larger share of the total than the material is. For a vanity the length is rarely the argument, because it is the depth and what has to be drilled through it that set the piece. Bathrooms take the same slab and roughly half the width.
The wall between the kitchen and the hall is load-bearing blockwork rather than a stud, so an opening through it is a lintel job and not an afternoon with a bolster. Floors are solid, so the unit sits where it is put and the levelling is done under it rather than argued with afterwards. A bathroom over a kitchen has its waste run already decided.
The housing behind these kitchens is 1930s private semi, LCC estate house, post-war infill and modern flat. The floor datum is the thing that changes most between them.
