The vanity tops we do in Whalebone follow the same process every time, and it is the kitchen rather than the process that decides how the day actually goes. The strip between Chadwell Heath and Becontree Heath, mixing estate housing with privately built inter-war semis, so kitchen sizes vary within a couple of streets of each other. Kitchens tend to be moderate: a new set of units in the existing footprint, a 3m run and a short return, with a peninsula only where the dining room wall has already gone. Whichever of those your kitchen turns out to be, the job in Whalebone runs the same way: survey, template, fit.
The balcony door frequently opens off the kitchen, which puts a threshold, a draught and a well-used route through one end of the run. Bathrooms in buildings like this are reached up a flight and worked in a room two people can barely stand in, and the visit is planned around both. Small enough to carry, awkward enough to plan.
The ground floor is a solid slab with a bitumen membrane and no void under it, so services either run on the surface or get chased into something hard. Bathrooms in this stock are compact, squarely built and take a short vanity that will come out of almost any offcut, which makes them among the cheapest bathroom tops we cut. Pressed steel baths and stone vanities are a common pairing.
What we are cutting for, here, is 1930s semi, LCC estate house and post-war infill. The wall build-up is different in each, and the scribe follows the wall.
