The kitchens in Clerkenwell are not all one kind, and which kind you have changes the vanity tops long before the stone is ordered. Loft conversions of print, watchmaking and light-industrial buildings, where the kitchen is a run and an island in one large open space with exposed brick, steel and timber floors. Runs of 4m plus a 2.5-3m island are common, and one stone carried across island, worktops and splashback suits that scale. Send through a photograph or two and the rough run length. We will tell you what you are probably dealing with.
Exposed brick and steel is the whole job here, because neither of them presents a flat plane to scribe to. What that does to a vanity is push the whole job into a narrow depth, because a bathroom takes the same stone as a kitchen in about two thirds of the width. Cut for the basin you bought, not for a standard one.
Original brickwork is uneven by ten millimetres or more across a bay, so the back edge is scribed to the actual face rather than to a line. Bathrooms in these buildings are pods built inside the shell, so the walls are new square studwork and the room was set out on paper rather than inherited. Square rooms make short work of a vanity template.
The housing on these streets is former industrial warehouse conversion, Georgian terrace, Victorian model-dwelling block and modern apartment. The run length that is easy in one is a join in another.
