Where the vanity tops in Green Street get complicated is rarely the stone itself, and much more often the room the stone has to go into. Residential kitchens above the retail parade are long and narrow, fitted along one wall for 2.5m or so, with limited natural light and the flat's only stair coming up beside them. Behind the parade the terraces have conventional rear kitchens serving large families. Nothing above needs settling before you get in touch. It gets settled with a tape measure, in your kitchen, in Green Street.
Small, roughly square kitchens with a back door and a window in the middle of the run: short lengths, few joins, and a lot to work around. The fittings come from four suppliers and arrive in no particular order, so the surface is drawn last and asked to reconcile all of them. Bathrooms take the same slab and roughly half the width.
These flats have been reconfigured more than once, so the kitchen often sits in what was a bedroom with services run a long way to reach it. The bathroom is the small room over the kitchen, and the waste already runs where it needs to, so the basin position is more or less settled before anyone draws anything. Where the floor is solid, the unit sits where it is put.
On these streets the housing is flat over shop, Edwardian terrace and market-area mixed-use building. Each of those puts the services somewhere else, and the cut-outs follow.
